WordPress 2.9 “Carmen” Released

Last Updated on by

It was announced recently that WordPress 2.9 has been released. There are a few cool new features, which I’ll list below:

  • Built-in image editing – This feature allows you to do basic image editing to your uploads, including cropping, resizing, rotating, among other things.
  • Easier embedded content – Using the oEmbed standard, embedding content can now be as simple as pasting a URL. Support for YouTube, DailyMotion, Flickr,, among many others.
  • Global trash feature – The Delete button is now replaced with a Trash button, giving you a second chance to recover posts or comments you would have otherwise deleted by accident.
  • Bulk plugin upgrade – Now you’re able to bulk upgrade plugins automatically, instead of upgrading one by one. On top of that, it now takes advantage of the community-powered plugin compatibility data from the plugin directory.

The video below covers these features in more detail.

I’ve upgraded a few of my sites to 2.9 with no issues. Regardless, make sure you backup your site beforehand. If for some reason automatic upgrade doesn’t work, you can still upgrade manually.

Has anyone else tried WordPress 2.9? Let me know what you think in the comments.

The only issue I ran into so far was feedwordpress, most notably, MagpieRSS, is not compatible with WordPress 2.9. I found no newer version available yet so I had to disable for now.

    • Leland

Jim, thanks for letting us know. Wouldn’t be the first time a new version of WP broke FeedWordPress.

Ill wait until there is good reviews on it, and theres bound to be bugs always, so ill wait until someone says its worth the upgrade, im sure i can live without rotating an image and “trashing” posts and comments.

    • Leland

Same here, I upgraded a few sites with no issues, but I’ll wait just a bit to be on the safe side for others.

This seems to be just a “feature” release so I don’t see any immediate need to upgrade.

Some very handy features but not huge in the big scheme of things maybe?

I’ve updated all my sites no probs at all.

So just conforming… does the image editing feature affect the original uploaded image… and then all the rest of the auto generated thumbnails etc?

    • Leland

Pete, don’t think the image editing feature affects the original uploaded image. I think it generates a new image with any edits. You’re able to revert your changes (and use the original) at any time.

I fixed the Feedwordpress/MagpieRSS issue by downgrading rss.php and rssfunctions.php to the previous version. I renamed the newer version (2.9) so it can be reactivated when feedwordpress is updated. Hope that helps!

Hey Jim, thanks for coming back and sharing that fix!

I don’t know what the deal was, but when I upgraded to 2.9 it would crash the browser in IE. I couldn’t figure it out myself, but maybe you could help. I have created my own theme and for some reason the sidebar wouldn’t load properly and would crash in IE, but worked fine in every other browser…

    • Leland

Tyler, that’s very odd that a theme would start crashing in IE after you upgraded to 2.9.

Was there any code added to your theme output after you upgraded?

I was so excited about wordpress 2.9 but after its release when I updated it, I landed with 2-3 tech issues… I checked into the forum and realize its not only me
other users are facing similar issues…
