In his good bye post, Leland told the story of ThemeLab and how it helped him grow. Reading his post, you will notice that he mentioned some of the mistakes he made. One of the mistakes he mentioned was not paying enough attention to develop his personal brand. It is great to have Twitter followers and Facebook fans, but there is nothing more personal than email. In this article, we will discuss why you need an email list to build your personal brand.
People are social animals, they want to know other people and learn more about them. When a new user visits your website, they want to know who are the people behind a website. An “about us” page is the best way to introduce yourself to your readers. But there is nothing more personal than email. Here is why:
Email is direct, when you send an email you get access to people’s inbox, a place most users check several times a day. The inbox is the place where they get emails from their boss, co-workers, and their moms. If you want people to recognize you as a brand, then email is the communication tool that you need.
When users sign up for your list, they are giving you the consent to contact them. They trust you, find you interesting, and want to hear more from you.
On your website, you may have a formal tone. Your content needs to follow some kind of editorial guidelines. But on email you can be yourself. In fact it is recommended to be yourself when sending out an email.
If you want to develop your personal brand, then building an email list is the most important thing you need to do right away.
What Do I Need to Get Started?
The first thing you need is an email service provider. When I say email service provider, I mean a company that specializes in sending bulk emails. There are many good email service providers, but I recommend MailChimp and Aweber.
Once you have signed up for an email service, the next thing you need is to get your users to sign up. Now this is the difficult part. You want to put subscription forms on your website but you also don’t want to annoy your users with intrusive tactics. This is where OptinMonster comes in.
OptinMonster allows you to create beautiful non-intrusive optin forms to build your email list. You can add optin forms in your sidebar, footer, slide in widgets, or lightbox popup. You can even add a lightbox optin form that only appears when a user is about to leave your website.
Now that you have started building your email list and you have subscribers, What’s next? How often and what kind of emails you should send?
People want to get updates related to your website so tell them about latest updates. If you are running a blog then talk about the posts you published recently. Add some other things to your emails as well, so that the email is not just a summary of weekly posts but also offers something extra.
As for frequency, I would recommend you to be careful about how often you send email. Start with a weekly email, and your users will let you know if they want to receive emails more frequently.
As I mentioned earlier, emails are very personal form of communication. Give your emails a personal touch, so your users feel that an actual human being sat down to write all this. Many famous bloggers send out their emails with their names as the sender instead of their blog. This helps user identify you and builds your personal brand over time.
I hope this article helped you understand why you need an email to build your personal brand. If you liked it then please join us on Twitter or subscribe to our email list.
