The Flexibility of WordPress

Last Updated on by

I’ve always been a firm believer that WordPress can be more than just a “blogging platform.” With the power of themes and plugins, WordPress can be extended to do much more than just blog. This post over at the ThemeForest blog highlights several examples of WordPress themes that bring WordPress to higher levels of functionality.

  • Content Management System
  • Magazine
  • Job Listings
  • Showcase
  • Portfolio
  • Real Estate
  • Game/Film Review
  • A Forum
  • Twitter

Most of the themes featured on the post are commercial, available for purchase on ThemeForest or other outlets.

Can you think of any examples of innovative WordPress sites or themes that really push the envelope?

opendesigns.org is a great example showcasing submitted designs

  • Leland

Yes indeed. OpenDesigns is an excellent example of WordPress (and bbPress) too. Thanks for the comment, Pete.

I believe they use Vanilla for their forum (not bbpress). But there’s been lots of talk to upgrade the forum, and bbpress has been suggested.

I’d love to see WordPress developed as an online booking facility… there was one (plugin) in development somewhere but i think it’s stopped.

  • Leland

Hmm now that would be interesting. I wonder what happened to the plugin?

And yeah you’re right, they do use Vanilla for the forum.

I love seeing how far WordPress can be taken.

I also like to see it work as an online dating/matchmaking website

You’re absolutely right, and I think the word “flexibility” is the perfect way to describe WordPress. I’m also seeing a boom in companies who are requiring this skill for their new hires. In fact, this article shows some interesting WordPress trends that actually show these jobs increasing by 4 times what they were just a year earlier. It’s pretty impressive.
