Would You Be Interested in bbPress Themes?

bbPress is forum software made by the creators of WordPress. It’s simple and lightweight. It powers Theme Lab’s support forums. I was working on a bbPress theme the other day, and thought it might be a good idea to offer matching bbPress themes to go along with some of the WordPress themes here at Theme Lab.

Here are some screenshots of the TechJunkie theme for bbPress I’ve been working on…after the jump.

I’m still working on it, so it’s not completely “polished” yet. For now, you can see the live demo ~~here~~.

I know the top navigation links don’t actually link to anything. Remember, my intention was to integrate these forums as an extension of a WordPress blog, so hopefully you would already have existing pages to link to.

bbPress Announces 1.0 Alpha Series Releases

It was announced a few days ago that bbPress would be releasing a series of 1.0 alpha versions. These versions will be compatible with WordPress 2.6 and above, which is good news for me.

I took this opportunity to upgrade my own forums after sitting dormant for nearly a month after upgrading to WordPress 2.6. For all you people itching to ask questions in the forums, but couldn’t sign up or login, feel free to do so now.

WordPress 2.6 + bbPress = No Good

Some of you who frequent Theme Lab’s support forums may have noticed you aren’t able to login anymore.

Why is this? WordPress 2.6 – that’s why.

The cookie changes between 2.5.1 and 2.6 are so “radical” they render the WordPress-bbPress integration useless.

When is the bbPress update coming? Apparently, not any time soon.

WordPress-bbPress users are encouraged to stick with WordPress 2.5.1 until a stable bbPress update is released, but don’t hold your breath.

Is your bbPress installation returning 404 errors?

This is something that has been bothering me for the longest time. My bbPress forum installation which I use for theme support, among other things, was returning 404 errors in headers. These forums were integrated into my WordPress installation here so I could have the same layout, etc.

Google Webmaster tools kept reporting 404 errors for the forum URLs and the W3C Validator claimed the page wasn’t there at all. Google also couldn’t crawl forum pages, as the Googlebot couldn’t “see” them. All of this was going on while everyone else could access the forum just fine.

Well, I finally discovered a fix for it on this bbPress forum post by Colin Burn-Murdoch. It’s a pretty tiny plugin you upload and activate in your /bb-plugins/ directory.

This only effects bbPress installations that are integrated with WordPress. If you don’t notice any 404 errors when browsing your forum this plugin is not necessary.
