Another New Theme Lab Design by James McDonald
December 5th, 2009. This was the date I last redesigned Theme Lab, which coincidentally was also done by James McDonald. Here’s a screenshot below for posterity purposes.

The Homepage
Probably the most prominent feature in the new design is the homepage design, which is notably different than the blog-style homepage of the previous design.
At the top are the three latest posts, then below a few featured articles to the left of a subscription area. Below are the latest five themes displayed in an interesting non-slidery way.
The Rest
Most of the rest of the features of the site are more are less the same, including threaded comments, tag pages for different types of themes, etc.
There’s a bit less emphasis on social media stuff, especially on the single post pages where I’d have share icons for MySpace, Technorati, and other sites you probably don’t even use.
There’s still a simple Facebook/Twitter link on the left side of the content area on single posts though. If you really feel the need to share a link on MySpace, however, feel free to do that as you normally would, but without the aid of a social networking icon link here.
Recommended Products
On every non-post page (except the homepage) I have a listing in the sidebar for “Recommended Products,” which are basically just affiliate links to paid WordPress themes and plugins I would recommend to others.
On single posts, this area is replaced with a “Related Posts” section.
Conclusion
So that’s about it. There may be a few kinks here and there, if you notice anything feel free to let me know in the comments (that are still threaded, by the way).
Oh and also, if you’re using IE6, this site probably looks like garbage because I use a lot of transparent PNG images, and I don’t intend on fixing it either. View it in a modern browser.
Let me know what you think in the comments! Oh yeah, and hire James McDonald for all your design needs, and hopefully me to code it.

Looking for web hosting?
Question: What's the best type of web hosting?
Answer: The kind you don't have to worry about.
And that's precisely why I recommend HostGator. I've been using them myself for years and they've been nothing short of superb.
Fast load times, great support, WordPress-friendly, and good prices. Not much more you can ask for.
New customers can get 25% off of any HostGator web hosting package with the coupon: themelab25percentoff
Note: I am a HostGator affiliate, but that doesn't make my recommendation any less genuine.

Looks good Leland (and James), I like it!
Thanks Mark!
Lovely! I specifically like the bio dropdown, the twitter feed style in the footer and the blue welcome box.
Thank you! Some of the things I forgot to mention in the actual announcement post.
A clean homepage, some more “lab” elements, and we can now put a face on the name: that’s a really good redesign, congrats!
My only remark would be concerning the font rendering on Windows, especially the bold text. But well, that’s my fault, I use Windows at work
The font rendering on Windows was actually one of my main concerns (I’m a Windows user too) but you’re the first person to mention it.
I may look into some font alternatives but there’s nothing I can do about Windows’ suckiness with fonts, lol.
Hey there Leland and James, this new design is really looking great!
I’m glad to see you still being active here:)
Thanks Adam, means a lot!
Ooo I love it Leland! I’ve said it a million times (and will probably say it another million times) I’m a sucker for a crisp and clean looking theme.
Lovely theme, good work lads. Font rendering on windows i poo, but on Osx, looks buteeful.
Love the new ThemeLab design! Great job by James. The previous design was already great but this one is more awesome.
Btw, I found out you’re gonna give a talk @ WordPressDC on August 9th? I’ll try to make it.
Thanks for the kind words, Jaypee!
And about WordPress DC, that’s correct. More info on the meetup is here: http://www.meetup.com/wordpressdc/events/25629841/
Looks like you’ve nailed the implementation of the theme. Superb man
