(which is not square format) and the thumbnails in square format

I think the proportion should be the same for photo and thumbnail ;=)

And I wonder if it is possible to use 600×450 dimension for the photo?

Although if you wanted to allow users to submit directly, I suppose you could open up your blog for registration and allow users to post that way.
