Gallery is a Thematic child theme, designed by Chris Wallace. Yes, that’s right – a child theme. Okay, gallery-style WordPress themes aren’t exactly a new concept, but when I first saw this theme, I was simply amazed.
In this review post, I’ll go step-by-step with my experience with using this theme, including how to install it, set it up, and add content.

And now onto the review…
Setting Up
Remember, this is a child theme, so you’ll need to upload both the parent theme as well as the child theme. Here are some basic instructions:
- Download Thematic, extract the folder, and upload it to your /wp-content/themes/ directory.
- Download Gallery, extract the folder, and upload it to your /wp-content/themes/ directory.
- Login to your WordPress admin panel, go to Appearance → Themes, and activate the “Gallery” theme
There are some more detailed instructions on installing WordPress child themes over at Themelets.
After everything is uploaded and installed correctly, you should have a WordPress site that looks something like this.
Now that everything is set up and functional, we can start adding content!
Thumbnail Sizing
Since this theme depends heavily on thumbnail images that are 125×125, we might as well go into our WordPress options and make sure the thumbnail size is set to that amount.
For a little more control, you might want to look into using the Max Image Size Control plugin. This way you don’t have constantly resize images. Let WordPress do the hard work for you.
Assuming you’re using screenshots of webpages for your gallery items, I would highly recommend the ScreenGrab add-on for Firefox, which makes it very simple to save full-page screenshots.
Adding Content
Hopefully now that you have your thumbnail situation squared away (no pun intended), you can start to add content. By popular demand, a post settings panel was added in version 1.1 of the Gallery theme. This way you don’t have to mess around with custom fields.
This is pretty self-explanatory, just make sure you input the full path to the images. If you’re not sure of the image URLs, try to insert them in the post and copy the URL from there. If you want the Delicious and Twitter links to show up, fill out the Website URL box.
After everything is filled out, you should get something like this.
Optional Plugins
As you can see in the above screenshot, you may see the 5 stars to the right of the title on single post pages. These are from Lester Chan’s WP-PostRatings plugin. Here’s how to set them up.
- Go to Plugins → Add New, search for “PostRatings” (should be the first result), install, and activate it.
- To get transparent PNG working, go into your plugin editor and carefully edit the top lines so PNG (instead of GIF) are active.
- Under “Ratings AJAX Style” change both ‘Show Loading Image With Text’ and ‘Show Fading In And Fading Out Of Ratings’ to ‘No’
- Under “Ratings Templates” change ‘Ratings Vote Text’ to %RATINGS_IMAGES_VOTE% and ‘Ratings Voted Text’ to %RATINGS_IMAGES%.
The theme also has styles already defined for the Contact Form 7 plugin, and well as the BuySellAds plugin.
Conclusion
I also think it’s worth mentioning the Galleria child theme, which is a child theme of Hybrid. It has a few minor differences from the original Gallery child theme. Depending on your personal preference, you may want to give this a shot as well.
All in all, this is a very cool theme. Not to mention it’s a Thematic child theme, which makes it even cooler, and you know it’s built on a rock-solid framework. With the thumbnails all configured to resize to the perfect dimensions, it would probably be relatively easy to maintain an active gallery site.
I plan on using a customized version this theme for a new gallery-style site. More on that soon. So, what did you think of the theme? Will you be using it? Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for the review Leland! I’m glad you like Gallery and are planning to use it for your own project.
I’ve been working directly with Ian and Chris (the developers of Thematic) on the next release of Gallery. The next release will eliminate the need for page templates within the child theme folder (index.php, category.php, etc.) and will fix some additional styling issues.
Thanks again for the review and the detailed installation instructions.
@Chris Wallace: No problem Chris, glad you liked the review, and thanks for the info on the new version of Gallery.
I’m wondering how the elimination of the page templates will work out, though. Will it have something to do with filtering some of Thematic’s built-in functions? Looking forward to it.
There were some changes to Thematic core that allowed us to remove some of the hard-coded changes to Thematic’s page templates. In short, yes, filters.
I’m also working on a couple different ways to integrate image resizing into the next version as well.
Imagine being able to upload a 1000×1000 large image, generate a large preview (500×375) and a thumbnail (125×125), then decide 6 months later to change the size of your thumbnails and large preview images (basically change the entire layout of the theme). Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to click a button to regenerate/resize new images for the last 6 months worth of posts based on that original 1000×1000 image?
These are the kinds of things I am currently working on. I certainly hope you enjoy the next version.
@Chris Wallace: That sounds like a great feature.
I think a big problem with a lot of WP themes that make extensive use of thumbnails (like gallery-style, magazine-style, etc.), is that it’s such a pain to get all the images resized properly.
Is there any timeframe of when the new version of Gallery will be released?
I agree, but that’s why I left it out of Version 1.
I think gallery-style sites take a bit more time to add posts to, and cropping thumbnails should be part of the process and is definitely a large part of the user experience. I personally prefer to hand-slice my thumbnails and large images. To each his own, I suppose.
The new version does not have a release date yet because it has to wait for the new version of Thematic. The new version of Gallery will not work with prior versions of Thematic due to the changes Chris and Ian have made.
Hopefully in the next couple weeks I will know more.
@Chris Wallace: Ah, I see. Well thanks for stopping by. Appreciate the comments along with the info on the next version of Gallery.
i’m using it for a Jewelery inspiration site at Tahitian Black Pearls
it’s a sweet theme indeed
@500ml: Hmm…a jewelry site, never would’ve thought of that, but it looks like it worked well for you. Thanks for the comment.
Wonderful review! Thanks for sharing…You have inspired me to give it a try! I’ll be downloading and playing this weekend!
Thank you for the detailed instructions! I will using this on one of my blog site.
This is one of the best free premium style gallery theme. It could be used in many ways. Only one minor bug with Internet Explorer. The scroll bars don’t show up.
hi. i first want to say that this is a wonderful theme. and i also have a question: can users submit links and pictures as well? thank you
@axelk: I think that’s what the Contact Form 7 is for. Although if you wanted to allow users to submit directly, I suppose you could open up your blog for registration and allow users to post that way. Or maybe you could look into this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tdo-mini-forms/
thank you for the reply. can Contact 7 be used to submit pictures as well?
@axelk: As in picture uploads? Not sure about that, although you could set up the form to allow users to send you a URL of an image.
I am not so happy with the photo dimensions of 500×375
(which is not square format) and the thumbnails in square format
I think the proportion should be the same for photo and thumbnail ;=)
And I wonder if it is possible to use 600×450 dimension for the photo?
Great review, I use the Gallery theme for my website and I think everything you said was pretty accurate. My only beef with it is that I wish my front page had more of a bang feel.
Hi!
I hope you can help me with this, but… how can I do to put the name of the blog instead of “Gallery”, I’ve noticed that in mixcss.com this could be done, but I still don’t get how to…
Thanks in advance!
Hi!
How I can add a sidebar (primary-aside) in a single post?
Thanks!
