When working on WordPress themes, it’s always nice to have the Template Tags page open to look up anything I may not be sure of. It became a pretty annoying task to switch from page to page, looking for the correct template tag - so I decided to have a custom tool developed called which would speed up the process. I call it the WordPress Template Tag Lookup Tool, and I’m sharing it with all of you.

WordPress Template Tag Lookup Tool

This tool is powered by Ajax, which means no page reloads. I hope all of you aspiring WordPress coders find this as useful as I have. Enjoy.

While I appreciate this tool and any other such product that helps in documentation efforts and in streamlining and increasing efficiency of finding relevant code pieces, the efficacy and usefulness of the tool will be borne out by constant updates to the functions that are in the core. Without constant updates to the documentation, this cool tool not only becomes obsolete, it also poses some serious problems for the development community. Think of the developer that might find this a year from now, base their code on information found in this tool and then realize that either the function has been deprecated or worse, modified to represent something completely different in the latest stable release.

That being said, I urge you to update it as often as possible and stay on top of absorbing and propagating changes to the core. Kudos on setting up this tool.

@Banago, Andrea: You’re welcome!

@Mark: I completely agree with you and will definitely try to keep up with the latest releases and make changes and additions when necessary.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Hi Leland, great idea for a handy tool! It took me a few minutes to figure out that I needed to put in the exact function name in order for it to display the expected results.

Using these in conjunction with your tool should give us all the most convenient access to tools we need to build our WP sites.

That’s a great idea, Adam. Certainly a possibility for a future tool. By the way those cheatsheets are great - thanks for the link.

You’re welcome. I noticed they’re for version 2.0, so I’m not sure if any of those tags have been deprecated, but it works for me;)
